The Nizam’s Seraphim Blue Diamond Traced? The Elusive Pink Diamond Is Next?

The appearance of a long ‘absconding’ Golconda diamond is always a cause for excitement among diamond experts, but when that diamond has a connection to the Nizams, the excitement reaches a whole new level. Talking about the multiple reports that have appeared in recent times. The reports claim that the Seraphim Blue Diamond, which had remained elusive for centuries has been traced to a collection in Russia. A few reports make a reference to ‘somewhere’ in Europe, without specifically naming Russia.

A browse through recent reports suggests that, the Seraphim Blue Diamond with an approximate weight of around 6 to 8 carats, was at one time worn in an opulent turban ornament by Asaf Jah 1, the first Nizam of Hyderabad. An interesting mention as, some reports claim that the Nizam owned two valuable turban ornaments, with rare fancy colored Golconda diamonds as the center stone. While one of those diamonds was the Seraphim Blue Diamond with impressive clarity, the second diamond was a pink diamond. This is an interesting claim as, pink diamonds originating from the Golconda diamonds, are extremely rare.

Most narratives agree that, the Seraphim Blue Diamond left the Nizam’s treasury shortly thereafter. This when the second Nizam of Hyderabad, handed the blue diamond over to the French in return for military support. Rumors of the blue diamond being part of a Russian collection, come after it remained untraced for centuries.

Little has been reported about the pink diamond from the turban ornament worn by the first Nizam. But rumors about the blue diamond, would very likely increase efforts to trace the missing pink diamond. Observing diamond turban ornaments during reign of the Nizams, it does appear that most ornaments had a precious gemstone in the center – rubies, sapphires and emeralds seemed to have been the preferred choice. Diamonds as center stones in turban ornaments seem to have been very rare.

The general thought is that the Seraphim Blue Diamond and the missing pink diamond, are likely to have a modest size of around 6 to 8 carats. However given the fact that, they were both mined in the Golconda mines and had a direct link to the first Nizam, auctioneers would expect them to attract exorbitant bids at an auction. All this remains hypothetical until the actual diamonds, make an appearance and are put up for auction.

While professional diamond collectors and reputed diamond testing offices, will wait for formal authentications on the story and features of the Seraphim Blue Diamond – the general opinion is that, it is just a matter of time before the diamond makes an appearance at a high profile auction. There are few hardcore critics who, see the story of the Seraphim Blue Diamond as a well compiled fairy tale! At the same time optimism prevails in some minds that, it is just a matter of time before the pink diamond reveals itself.
