Comprehensive betting guide on Kingsford Smith Cup 2022

The Kingsford Smith Cup is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The race has been run at both Doomben and Eagle Farm was upgraded to a Group 1 race in 2006 and this upgrade has led to an influx of quality interstate raiders competing each year. The majority of the runners engaged head to Queensland’s richest race, the Stradbroke Handicap a couple of weeks later.

The 2022 Kingsford Smith Cup will be run on Saturday 28th May at Eagle Farm racecourse. The total prizemoney is $700,000.

Kingsford Smith Cup History

An upgrade in status to Group 1 and a move in schedule have played a big role in the emergence of the Kingsford Smith Cup as a true headline act of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. The race is now the middle leg of the Sprint Winter Crown (with the Doomben 10000 and Stradbroke Handicap).

Track redevelopments has seen the race move around between both Doomben and Eagle Farm and the 1300m trip means that sprinters and middle-distance horses both have a chance. It is a great opportunity for potential stallions with GENERAL NEDIYM, FALVELON and THORN PARK all enjoying great careers at stud after winning the race.

Kingsford Smith Cup Form Guide

The last three winners have all raced in the Group 1 Doomben 10000 as their final lead in race. IMPENDING, THE BOSTONIAN, and VEGA ONE have all come out of the 1200m Group 1 race at Doomben. Male horses have dominated with only two mares winning the race since 2006 and 11 of the 14 winners have placed in their lead up race.

After winning the race with IMPENDING in 2018 the Godolphin mega racing stable continue to target the race. They had three runners in the race last year including the favourite SAVITIANO with all runners unplaced. The Blue Army are expected to once again have a strong presence this year and must be respected. Discount them at your peril!

Famous Winners

The Kingsford Smith Cup has been a tough race for punters with only two favourites winning since the upgrade to Group One status. Those two favourites were the superstar BLACK CAVIAR ($1.14F in 2012) and cult hero APACHE CAT ($1.30 in 2008). Both horses were extremely popular winners and received a great reception from the large crowd in attendance.

VEGA ONE came from nowhere to win the race last year courtesy of a brilliant ride from champion jockey Jamie Kah. It was Kah’s sixth career Group 1 winner and made her the most successful female jockey in Australian history.
